July 2007

Over the weekend I came across some a really cool technique for taking artsy, grungy, old looking photos: Through the Viewfinder photography, aka TtV. In a nutshell it involves taking a digital picture through a second camera’s viewfinder–typically an old reflex camera from the 40’s and 50’s. I found a Kodak Brownie Reflex camera for ten bucks yesterday from an antique store, and have had the best day today taking photos through it with my Nikon D200. It sounds weird I know, and I’m thinking you’re either going to love it or hate it. If you want to know more about this technique, check out the fantastic tutorial by Russ Morris, and a TtV blog here (on hiatus, but still lots of good info there).

By the way, my little 60 year old Brownie camera is filthy on the inside…tons of dust and mold as you can see on the photos. I kind of like the effect, but would also like to have one clean….apparently they are pretty easy to take apart and de-dustify, so I’ve got another one coming from eBay shortly and will be dissecting it asap.

We just returned from a two week photo shoot vacation including parts of Oregon, Washington, and the amazing Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Between the two of us, I’m certain we took more than a couple thousand photos; no doubt you’ll be seeing more over the next month or so as we have time to process them. Here is just a quick sampling of the amazing wildlife we were treated to while on the island. A big thanks to Sandy McRuer of Rainbird Excursions for sharing his passion and knowledge of the area and where to spot the critters. Actually, a big thanks to MANY of the islanders–the folks there were incredibly kind and helpful.
